Barbara Brown Taylor, author, professor, Priest, and lecturer espouses rediscovering the ancient Desert Mother and Father practices of reverence.
Community- The practice of taking care, Hospitality or the Practice of encounter. The important spiritual practice of being with one another/Hospitality is not a new one; rather it is as old as we are. We must recognize that the Holy is not conformed to you. Sometimes the Holy Spirit has bad taste-and chooses tacky as well as you.
George Fox said, “To walk joyfully on earth and to respond to others with joy.” The desert fathers and mothers form the 4th century, lived in caves, but learned that the practice of hospitality may be what keeps them alive. People need one another to pray, sing with, seek God together, share meals, sometimes we just need someone else to draw us outside of ourselves. Someone else can make us forget ourselves. We need one another to save us from believing in ourselves. We need someone to tell our stories to. Awareness blooms when you become a part of something bigger than you. You can never underestimate the power of listening. There is a Divine union when you can escape the small self and see a bigger picture or connection to the luminous web that connects us all. To experience The Holiness of God is divine.
From Jesus and the wisdom of the desert people we learn the need of “to love our neighbor and thy self”. In order to do this, the ancient desert people advise us to recognize the face of Christ in others, to die for self, and to become another person for just a moment, to experience a time empathy. These abstract teachings can become embodied in a people as they carry out their faith in their heart with the real world. This becomes our Faith in action. We must seek to come to face to face with God We must learn to practice focusing on a human being, acknowledging others, looking them in the eyes. Jesus taught the practice of encountering. Jesus gave us the great commission and commandment in Matthew, to do this unto the least, practice loving the stranger, practice hospitality.
