Text Box: JUBILATION CHOIR

OUR MISSION     TO LIVE AS CHRIST

Jubilation Senior Adult Community Choir performed at the VA Hospital on Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2008.  A very special moment of the concert was provided during the “Patriotic Salute” as Lt. Col. Mark Schmidt and his son 2nd Lt. Jonathan Schmidt trumpeted taps back and forth in echo effect.  A rousing finale of “God Bless America” had the Jubilation members each waving a flag, as pictured.  Jubilation member Lois Lau coordinated donations to the hospital from Jubilation members . . . Twelve shopping bags full!!! It was time and talent well spent, to say the least.

Jubilation is ever grateful to the SPC family for their support and will “see you in September”.

We want to introduce to you the interim music staff who will be leading our choirs and providing music for worship in the months to come.  Laura Miles and Joanne Sherman will serve as the co-directors of music.  Laura holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Longwood College and a Masters of Education from the University of Virginia.  She has served as a church musician in the past and most recently as a elementary school teacher in the Chesterfield County Schools.  Recently she attended the Julliard School of Music where she studied choral musicianship and conducting. She is a member of Salisbury Presbyterian Church.

Joanne is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts with a degree in voice and piano.  Later, she attended Michigan State University and received her M.A. in  Education.  She has been a member of the Salisbury Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir along with her husband Lawson over the last months, an elementary school music teacher for Chesterfield County Schools and a continuing participant with Laura in the Richmond Symphony Chorus.

David Bryson will serve as our interim church organist.  David has a variety of experiences in church service.  He has both a Bachelor and Masters degree in Organ and Music Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He is originally from Richmond.

We welcome these new staff persons to Salisbury and to the important task to which they have been hired by the Session.

Dear Members of the Congregation;

                 John and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the many wonderful years that we have served God through the people of this church.  In countless ways, you have been a blessing to us and our children and we will be forever grateful for your love and support.  It has truly been a pleasure to be a part of this congregation and community.

                 At a music conference we recently attended, I was in a session in which we talked about the importance leaving our legacy.  Both intrigued and, frankly, a bit disturbed about such a discussion, I listened intently.  But soon the word legacy took on a new meaning for me and for the purpose in which we serve.  Legacy is not about building a kingdom, a large program, a huge choir, a new organ.  Our true legacy is what we instill and leave in the hearts of the people we have served.  It is the spiritual values, commitment to mission, and the Christian education that we have taught.  Our legacy is what will live on in others so that they may go out and do the same.  If you memorized a scripture through a song, discovered the importance of serving the greater community through a choir tour, felt God’s great presence through the peal of the organ, or learned the Book of Matthew through Godspell, then we have left our legacy.  It is truly our hope that in some way the Music Ministry has blessed you so that you may bless others.

                 To say that we will miss you all is an understatement.  It is in the giving that we receive and John and I have been blessed and spiritual fed by each and every one of you.  And for that, we give thanks.

                 Soli Deo Gloria

                                                                                                      John and Sharon Miller
