SPC BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE

THE SPC BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE

The 2008 Buildings and Grounds Committee is a Session committee consisting of 3 active elders. Other members from the congregation at large make up the balance of the committee membership. There are no limits on those who wish to participate on the B&G committee and all of those who wish to actively participate are welcome. Current total membership is approximately 25 members. The B&G committee typically meets at SPC on the second Monday of every month at 7:00pm unless otherwise noted

Responsibilities:
The Buildings and Grounds Committee is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the single largest physical asset of Salisbury Presbyterian Church, our buildings and property. In addition, we also oversee the subcontractors responsible for cleaning our facilities and maintaining our exterior grounds. Our facilities continue to be used more extensively by the congregation and local groups sponsored by SPC. The increasing age and heavier use require constant up keep and a long-term vision regarding major maintenance and improvements. With one of the largest non-payroll related operating budgets, it is our responsibility to prudently use the yearly budget and approved capital funds to maintain and to improve the SPC buildings and grounds. It is also our responsibility as a committee to organize and to solicit the help of our congregation to meet these same objectives. Through organized workdays, special projects and our daily participation in the activities of SPC, we all have a duty to look after the well being of our facilities.

More specifically, the following responsibilities fall under B & G:

  1. Church Property - Buildings and Grounds is responsible for the maintenance, repair, replacement of the church buildings and physical plant. The office staff of SPC (including the custodial staff) will advise the deacon members of items, which need attention as they arise. In emergencies, the staff will take appropriate action as needed and advise the committee leadership as needed. The committee leadership will provide the staff each year with updated contact information noting whom to call depending on how responsibilities are divided. The committee leadership shall be responsible for authorizing work to be paid for from the annual budget and approving invoices when work is completed.

  2. Long Range Plan - It shall be the responsibility of the committee and its leadership to maintain a rolling medium/long range plan of projects that will require church funding outside of budgeted monthly expenses. Recommendations and routine reports are to be made to the Session regarding such long range needs.

  3. Kitchen Oversight Committee - The Kitchen Oversight shall come under the responsibility of the B&G committee. At least one member of the B&G committee will be active in the Kitchen Oversight Committee.

  4. Memorial Garden Committee - The Memorial Garden Committee shall come under the responsibility of the B&G committee for the purpose of coordinating the maintenance of the memorial garden. However, the Memorial Garden Committee shall have responsibility for all matters related to its use, funding and maintenance. At least one member of the Memorial Gardens Committee will sit on the B&G Committee to facilitate communication.

  5. Security - B&G shall be responsible for maintaining and updating the fire alarm call list. Those noted on the alarm call list shall be trained to handle calls from the security company should a fire alarm be received.

  6. Work Days - B&G will coordinate at least 2 work days per year soliciting help from the general congregation and those who express interest in helping as noted on the time and talent sheets. One main workday will be coordinated in the spring and fall. The committee shall also designate from time to time mini-workdays to accomplish specific tasks that need to be completed before the next scheduled workday.

  7. Mini-Workdays - Outside of the major workdays of the church and also to promote committee involvement, B&G committee members, at the direction of the committee co-chairs, will be participating in various mini-workdays. Some projects will be specific and others may be varied

  8. Budget - It shall be the duty of the Committee to develop a yearly operating budget for the areas under B&G responsibility. A draft budget shall be reviewed submitted to the Finance Committee prior to submitting the proposed budget to the Session.
